Could you tell us how and why you chose mathematics? Some articles and biographies about you mention that you first went for medecine, then worked in a factory, before turning to maths. What was the trigger? When did you decide that it would become your profession? During your early years, which areas of mathematics did you get interested in and who influenced you the most? Could you tell us something about meeting Paul Erdös and about your work together? What are the main theorems you are responsible for? What can you tell us about the Erdös and Turan conjecture that you proved - which is known as 'Szemerédi's theorem'? You are one of the founders/experts of Graph Theory and of Theoretical Computer Science. Please tell us more about your research in these domaines... In the book 'An Irregular Mind' published on the occasion of your 70th birthday, it is said that you have a unique way of thinking, a brain that differs from other mathematicians and that many of your peers admire your extraordinary imagination. What do they mean by this ? Many of your peers admire your imagination... How important is imagination when you are a mathematician? You are one of the main establishers of Additive Combinatorics. What is it about and why is this field getting a renewed interest right now?

Résumé : Endre Szemerédi (born August 21, 1940) is a Hungarian-American mathematician, working in the field of combinatorics and theoretical computer science. He has been the State of New Jersey Professor of computer science at Rutgers University since 1986. Szemerédi has won prizes in mathematics and science, including the Abel Prize in 2012. He has made a number of discoveries in combinatorics and computer science, including Szemerédi's theorem, the Szemerédi regularity lemma, the Erdös-Szemeredi theorem, the Hajnal-Szemerédi theorem and the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem.
