Konstantin, what made you choose math? When did you decide that it would become your profession? What was your first encounter with mathematics? Your first mathematical 'shock wave'? Let's talk about your research, which areas of mathematics do you focus on? Let's talk about the Jean-Morlet Chair…What were your main reasons for applying? What was the scientific content of your semester? What are the benefits of this semester for Aix-Marseille, the students here, other researchers and for yourself? What was the leading event of this semester? Can you tell us about your plans after the Chair? Holders of the Chair are housed in the Jean-Morlet House for researchers. Do you find it to be the right place to work in peace? What is your view on this special scientific concept of focusing on a theme for one whole semester? And how do you feel about being here at Cirm? What do you think about the place?

Khanin received his PhD from the Landau Institute of Theoretical Physics in Moscow and continued working there as a research associate until 1994. Afterwards, he taught at Princeton University, at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge, and at Heriot-Watt University before joining the faculty at the University of Toronto. Khanin was an invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematics in Barcelona in 2000. He was a 2013 Simons Foundation Fellow. He held the Jean-Morlet Chair at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathématiques in 2017, and he is an Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2018 in Rio de Janeiro.
