We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of infinitely many non-arithmetic Teichmuller curves in a stratum of abelian differentials. This is joint work with Simion Filip and Alex Wright.

This is joint with Adrian Langer. Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. We show that every rigid integral irreducible representation $ \pi_1(X,x) \to SL(3,\mathbb{C})$ is of geometric origin, i.e. it comes from a family of smooth projective varieties. The underlying theorem is a classification of VHS of type $(1,1,1)$ using some ideas from birational geometry.

It is a theorem of Hilbert that a real polynomial in two variables that is nonnegative is a sum of 4 squares of rational functions. Cassels, Ellison and Pfister have shown the existence of such polynomials that are not sums of 3 squares of rational functions. In this talk, we will prove that those polynomials that may be written as sums of 3 squares are dense in the set of nonnegative polynomials. The proof is Hodge-theoretic.

Absolute sets and the Decomposition Theorem - Budur, Nero (Author of the conference) | CIRM H

Multi angle

We give a new, more conceptual proof of the Decomposition Theorem for semisimple perverse sheaves of rank-one origin, assuming it for those of constant-sheaf origin, that is, assuming the geometric case proven by Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne-Gabber. Joint work with Botong Wang.

Gushel-Mukai varieties and their periods - Debarre, Olivier (Author of the conference) | CIRM H

Multi angle

Gushel-Mukai varieties are defined as the intersection of the Grassmannian Gr(2, 5) in its Plücker embedding, with a quadric and a linear space. They occur in dimension 6 (with a slighty modified construction), 5, 4, 3, 2 (where they are just K3 surfaces of degree 10), and 1 (where they are just genus 6 curves). Their theory parallels that of another important class of Fano varieties, cubic fourfolds, with many common features such as the presence of a canonically attached hyperkähler fourfold: the variety of lines for a cubic is replaced here with a double EPW sextic.
There is a big difference though: in dimension at least 3, GM varieties attached to a given EPW sextic form a family of positive dimension. However, we prove that the Hodge structure of any of these GM varieties can be reconstructed from that of the EPW sextic or of an associated surface of general type, depending on the parity of the dimension (for cubic fourfolds, the corresponding statement was proved in 1985 by Beauville and Donagi). This is joint work with Alexander Kuznetsov.[-]

We study locally the representation varieties of fundamental groups of smooth complex algebraic varieties. These are schemes whose complex points parametrize such representations into linear algebraic groups. At a given representation, the structure of the formal local ring to the representation variety tells about the obstructions to deform formally this representation, which is ultimately related to topological obstructions to the possible fundamental groups of complex algebraic varieties. This was first described by Goldman and Millson in the case of compact Kähler manifold, using formal deformation theory and differential graded Lie algebras. We review this using methods of Hodge theory and of derived deformation theory and we are able to describe locally the representation variety for non-compact smooth varieties and representations underlying a variation of Hodge structure.[-]

Exponential motives - Fresán, Javier (Author of the conference) | CIRM H

Multi angle

I will sketch the construction - following ideas of Kontsevich and Nori - of a Tannakian category of exponential motives over a subfield of the complex numbers. It is a universal cohomology theory for pairs of varieties and regular functions, whose de Rham and Betti realizations are given by twisted de Rham and rapid decay cohomology respectively. The upshot is that one can attach to any such pair a motivic Galois group which conjecturally generalizes the Mumford-Tate group of a Hodge structure and, over number fields, governs all algebraic relations between exponential periods. This is a joint work with Peter Jossen (ETH).[-]
